"The classic situation-comedy, "The Munsters," regarding a good-natured family of gothic-horror ghouls, was seen from 1964 to 1966. From 1988 to 1991, the series was revived as "The Munsters Today," the conceit being that the family fell asleep for twenty-two years following a failed experiment. The new cast featured John Schuck as Herman Munster (a take on Frankenstein's Monster); the lovely Lee Meriwether as his wife Lily (a vampire); Jason Marsden as Edward "Eddie" Wolfgang Munster (a young werewolf); Hilary Van Dyke (no relation to Dick and Jerry), as Marilyn Munster (Lily's "plain" niece); and Howard Morton as "Grandpa" Vladimir Dracula, Count of Transylvania (a vampire and mad-scientist). Though it took a bit for the show to gain its comedic footing, the cast acquired top-flight timing, and the series became quite witty, especially in its occasion use of Yiddish humor. Marsden eventually "steals" every scene in which he is included. Though the original version had the advantage of being filmed in black & white, the sequel scored in presenting an array of guest stars, including Kaye Ballard, Jonathan Brandis, Ruth Buzzi, Mossie Drier, Nancy Dussault, Nanette Fabray, Kathleen Freeman, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Eddie Mekka, Pat Morita, Don Most, Lois Nettleton, Marcia Wallace, and Yetta. In the documentary, "Privacy and Power: A Year in the Life of Prince Albert of Monaco," the series achieved a form of royal approbation when His Serene Highness was overheard whistling "The Munsters' Theme," as composed by Jack Marshall."
